Service

In addition to our designated service projects, we have also provided projects for members to participate. There are 4 “Fun and Friendly” projects, 2 in the fall, and 2 in the spring.

Kids On The Block Puppet Teams

Members present puppet shows for elementary school children concerning various disabilities or situations in their lives.  The puppet teams perform on Tuesday or Wednesdays throughout the school year.  The hours are according to school needs, but are usually in the morning.  There are special training sessions for puppet team participation.  Usually 10 performances each semester earns 30 hours.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE (C-LIFE)

This is a year-round project.  Members visit Morningside Manor (assisted living facility) on the second Monday evening of each month to play BUNCO.   Members earn 3 hours per event.

ANY BABY CAN

ABC makes every effort to give each at-risk child their own quilt.  The quilts may be sewn, crocheted, knitted, tied or purchased.  All quilts must be 45X60 inches.  One quilt style is a strip-style quilt that is sewn on a machine and hand tied off.  Each handmade quilt earns 10 service hours.  Members earn 3 hours of service for the purchase of 2 quilts.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE BREAKFAST

Members host a wonderful brunch with lots of food, door prizes, and info for breast cancer survivors.  We set up, serve and clean up for this annual event held at the Downtown University Hospital Clinic; usually held on the first Thursday in November.

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL TOY DONATION DELIVERY (SPECIAL PROJECT 09/08)

SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS

Members fill provided stockings to be given to children for the Holidays.  Service hour credit is earned for only two stockings, but more may be done if desired for other hour credit.

BATTERED WOMENS SHELTER (FALL & SPRING WORKDAY)

Members provide “manpower” to upkeep the various facilities for the residents.  The members completely clean and furnish the shelter apartments with dishes, linens, small kitchen appliances, cleaning supplies and decorations.  The resident may take these items once they are ready to move out on their own.  The fall workday is typically second Saturday in November and spring workday is held in April.

ELF LOUISE (FUN & FRIENDLY)

Members wrap Christmas packages for Elf Louise.  Gifts are distributed to underprivileged children around San Antonio.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL (FUN & FRIENDLY)

Members provide and serve ice cream for residents of Morningside Manor during the month of July with a patriotic theme.

FIESTA ARTS FAIR (FUN & FRIENDLY)

Members will participate in the city’s annual Fiesta celebration by helping in several capacities at Fiesta Arts Fair.

OPERATION HOMEFRONT (FUN & FRIENDLY)
